World Food Safety Day: 7 June 2025

Food Safety is everyone’s business, says WHO

True, and it’s particularly our business.  At a breakfast for industry CEOs and senior managers, hosted by the Centre and AsureQuality in May, our international guest, food safety culture expert Frank Yiannas warned them about the dangers of complacency.

World Food Safety Day is a reminder not to let our attention wander.  There are emerging risks which food companies need to be aware of.  The best way to keep ahead is to join the Centre (for a very modest membership fee)!

And the NZIFST conference (24-26 June), this year in Palmerston North, is an easy and efficient way to learn about the latest science and research and meet the scientists, regulators, and industry representatives.  It offers a great programme, organised jointly by the Centre.  We’ll all be there if you want to know more about the Centre’s services.

Director of NZFSSRC, Dr Libby Harrison, emphasises that "Science is at the heart of food safety. It helps us understand what makes food unsafe and guides us on how to prevent foodborne diseases. The theme of World Food Safety Day on 7 June 2025 draws attention to the use of scientific knowledge as key to reducing illness, cutting costs and saving lives."
