A decade ago, the New Zealand Food Safety Science & Research Centre was established with a clear mission: to bring together the best scientific and industry minds in Aotearoa New Zealand to tackle the food safety challenges that matter most.
We're marking that milestone with a video which features the voices of the researchers and industry partners who have been part of that journey.
Over those ten years, that value has been felt across the breadth of New Zealand's food sector. The Centre has connected research institutions with the industries and regulators who need their findings most; translating science into practice, and practice into safer outcomes for producers and consumers alike. From strengthening food safety systems to building the evidence base that supports Aotearoa New Zealand's market access and export reputation, the Centre's work has made a tangible difference at every level of the food chain.
None of that would have been possible without strong leadership and a steadfast institutional home. Massey University Te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa has hosted the Centre's directorate since its inception, and its ongoing commitment, alongside funding from MPI-New Zealand Food Safety, continues to underpin everything the Centre delivers. We also gratefully acknowledge the foundational support from MBIE in the Centre's earlier years, which made this work possible from the start.
Through it all, the Centre has been guided by outstanding leadership: Distinguished Professor Nigel French, Dr Cath McLeod, and Dr Libby Harrison each shaped its direction and built the collaborative culture that defines it today, and we are equally excited to continue that work with incoming director Dr Marie Bradley, who brings fresh energy and perspective as we look to the decade ahead.
To hear directly from the organisations whose work has been shaped by the Centre's research, we invite you to watch the extended video featuring perspectives from the Meat Industry Association, Apples & Pears New Zealand, New Zealand King Salmon along with some of our research partners, Cawthron Institute, and the Bioeconomy Science Institute. Together, they speak to the real-world impact that a decade of focused, collaborative science can deliver.
