Supporting Next Generation of Science Leaders

Dr Rose Collis received an inaugural NZFSSRC PhD Scholarship developing technical skills in microbial genomics, antimicrobial resistance, metagenomics and bioinformatics. Her PhD earnt a place on Massey University’s Dean’s List of Exceptional Doctoral Theses in 2022 and AgResearch student prize. She is now a researcher in the Bioeconomy Science Institute's Food Integrity team. To learn more of her journey read 'Next generation science leaders' (p22). 

Holly Gray is about to finish her PhD at Massey University, funded by Meat Industry Association and NZFSSRC. She is investigating the evolution and survival mechanisms of Shiga toxin producing E. coli (STEC) – a foodborne pathogen that can cause serious illness in humans. It can be found in the environment, on farm, and in livestock animals. Holly knows all about the farm environment having grown up on a lifestyle block in the Wairarapa. Her work is another building block in keeping STEC out of the red meat food chain.
