New Zealand's red meat exports, valued at over $10 billion, are the country's second-largest earner, driven by a reputation for exceptional food safety. This reputation has been maintained through ongoing research, spearheaded by Dr. Gale Brightwell, Associate Director of NZFSSRC and Principal Scientist at AgResearch. For the past 20 years, Dr. Brightwell and her team have developed innovative technologies and interventions to extend the shelf life of chilled meats bound for Europe and reduce contamination risks from harmful E. coli strains like STEC. This work has also fostered the development of a new generation of scientists, skilled in advanced technologies and commercialisation. Emerging leaders like Amanda, Delphine, Rose, and Tanu are already making significant contributions, reflecting the future of food safety innovation.
