The Management of Cronobacter in Powdered Infant Formula Manufacturing and/or Dairy Processing Plants in New Zealand

The production of this guide represents three years of intensive and incredibly detailed work, involving key dairy industry players and regulators, motivated and led by Distinguished Professor Phil Bremer (the Centre’s Chief Scientist) and Associate Professor Simon Swift (member of the Centre’s Science Leadership Team).  Cronobacter is of increasing concern to the infant formula industry after two newborns died from drinking contaminated formula, produced in the US (2022).  The consequences were enormous, including a critical national shortage of formula.

The guide is now available on the Centre’s website for any manufacturer to use.  It could not have happened without the generous attitude and cooperation of NZ companies, including Dr Philip Wescombe of Oceania Dairy Ltd, and too many experts at Fonterra to name.  They should be proud of an initiative that has the potential to save precious new lives.  Read more about it in the latest issue of FoodNZ (page 22) – the magazine of the NZ Institute of Food Science and Technology.
