NZ Food Safety Science & Research Centre appoints a new Chief Scientist

12 December 2022

Distinguished Professor Phil Bremer as new Chief Scientist

I am delighted to announce that Distinguished Professor Phil Bremer has accepted the permanent role of Chief Scientist with the NZ Food Safety Science & Research Centre. This critical position ensures the quality of our science and research and supports the formation of our best teams.

Phil was recently appointed Distinguished Professor by the University of Otago where he teaches and researches ways to improve the safety and quality of food produced in Aotearoa. His research focuses on developing new technologies and approaches to track and control foodborne pathogens. Professor Bremer also explores ways to reduce the country’s food waste, “to help provide food to those in need and reduce the economic and environmental cost of food loss and waste”.

Phil was acting director of the Centre until I took up the role in July 2022. Since then, Phil has been acting Chief Scientist pending the appointment of a replacement for Massey Distinguished Professor Nigel French. His work is invaluable to the Centre and has contributed significantly to its good reputation. The continuity of his involvement is a tremendous advantage for the Centre.
