In New Zealand, listeriosis is a quiet, steady sniper. Centre Chief scientist, Distinguished Professor Phil Bremer, reports that during 2022, 39 individual cases of listeriosis (seven perinatal – in the period around the time of birth – related cases and 32 non-perinatal) were reported by ESR, with four resulting deaths in the 70+ age group and two deaths of unborn babies. The case count for 2023 is not official yet but shows no improvement.
In an article on Listeria, Phil says “Despite our best efforts, the case numbers are flat-lining. But forget the numbers for the moment and contemplate the grief of those bereft parents, whether of stillborn babies (some near term) or newborns. Imagine that just one incautious move – not washing hands or changing gloves, not checking the refrigeration temperature, keeping a prepared salad for one day too long – were to cause the death of someone’s father or longed-for baby.”
