This issue of FoodNZ features an article (page 33) by the Centre about nanoparticles and nanomaterials in food and food packaging, and how these are being considered by regulatory authorities here and overseas. The Centre has an ‘Emerging Risk Identification System’ (ERIS) to gather intelligence on emerging food safety risks and issues, such as new pathogen and chemical contamination threats. ERIS supports decision-making by the food industry over future research. Nanomaterials are being developed to improve foods and food production and regulatory authorities are responding, but consumer knowledge of this technology appears to be low. ERIS researchers and their food industry partners have been discussing this topic for some time as part of keeping abreast of any emerging food safety risks.
